About Kalinga

Kalinga Foundation is an entirely volunteer-run non-profit organisation that strives to break the vicious cycle of poverty in which the children of the dirt inbelt find themselves.

What we do

Kalinga Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the education and development of children living in and around two large rubbish dumps on the outskirts of Manila.

Kalinga believes in providing structural aid and we see education as the most sustainable form of development in this regard.
Education is the only thing that really helps break the cycle of poverty in the long term. Good education allows children to develop and that development gives them the chance to make their own choices and work towards a better future.

Kalinga is run entirely by volunteers. Moreover, because these volunteers work from their own homes, there are no costs - apart from the cost of a bank account and a seal of approval - and all donations go directly to where they are intended: the projects we are committed to.

Education is an important key to a life free of poverty.

Going to the Papaya School and receiving an Apple Scholarship after that, made that I could do what I dreamt of for years. I now am a teacher!"

Projects

All of Kalinga's projects provide structural support to children and their families living in and around the Payatas rubbish dump, on the outskirts of Manila (Philippines). More than 140,000 people live around this dump, many of whom live by collecting and separating the waste. Some collect aluminium, others plastic, cardboard or wood. Children often participate from an early age.

Living near an open dump is dangerous. Because dumping is continuous, shifts occur regularly, killing people with some regularity. However, the greatest risk is the impact that living among the waste has on the health of these people.

Papaya School

Papaya School is a primary school (similar to grade 2 to grade 8) that provides quality education to children living around a large rubbish dump in Manila.

Apple Project

The Apple project provides scholarships for students who wish to continue their learning at a secondary or vocational school after their time at Papaya School.

Pinapple Project

Pinapple offers activities and work for and by parents with the aim of generating a better family income, allowing their children to focus on school (instead of work).

Our people

The board of the Kalinga Foundation consists of seven volunteers. All with different backgrounds but with a common mission: to improve the living conditions of children in Manila. The board meets regularly.

Based on an annual plan and budget, the board monitors activities and publishes the main results in its annual report. Every year, members of the board visit the various projects to determine progress and discuss issues with local stakeholders.
